Carissimi Giovani:
Vi saluto di cuore. Tutto il mio affetto e la mia amicizia per tutti e ciascuno di voi!
Sono molto contento di poter condividere con voi questa Eucaristia, nella quale Cristo si fa presente in mezzo a noi, come in quel tramonto sulla strada di Emmaus. Qui, tra di noi, si adempie l’ora di Gesù, quell’ora di cui ci parla il Vangelo di oggi: l’ora nella quale Cristo stesso si offre liberamente al Padre, compiendo la Sua volontà e portando a termine la missione ricevuta da Lui, nella quale ci rivela, amandoci fino alla fine, che Dio è amore e misericordia. Gli uomini del suo tempo, che non sapevano quello che facevano, avevano l’intenzione di arrestarlo e di eliminarlo, ovvero di ucciderlo: ci hanno provato, ma Egli è vivo. Gesù ha adempiuto la volontà del Padre fino in fondo, dando la Sua vita per la salvezza di tutti. Così si è compiuta l’ora per la quale era stato inviato: la salvezza degli uomini. Ancora oggi, per molti che non sanno cosa fanno, che non conoscono Gesù, che non conosco Dio, che è Amore incommensurabile, senza limiti, egli è scomodo e, in modo sbagliato, pretendono di eliminarlo. Ma Gesù, sempre presente in mezzo a noi, continua a mostrarci il volto del Dio che invia suo Figlio al mondo perché ama agli uomini e lo invia non per condannare il mondo, ma per salvarlo. Tuttora, molti uomini e donne, molti giovani, cercano e credono che la salvezza e la felicità dell’uomo si trovino nel piacere, nel benessere ad ogni costo, nella libertà senza limiti, nel sesso, nell’affermazione di se stessi facendo a meno di Dio, nel potere e nell’avere opposti al pensiero di Dio, nel cercare di imporre agli altri la propria volontà, nel godimento narcisista o nell’egoismo di chi si preclude nella propria carne. Ma si sbagliano, perché lì non c’è salvezza, non c’è futuro, non c’è speranza possibile. Cercano e camminano per vie errate. Alcuni, purtroppo, nemmeno cercano più.
Permettetemi che vi faccia una domanda: Che cosa cercate e sperate?
So bene, infatti, che il vostro cuore cerca e attende. Nonostante ciò che può apparentemente sembrare e nonostante ciò che alcuni forse pensano sui giovani di oggi, la vita non ha chiuso né spento in voi aspirazioni nobili e profonde. Voi cercate di essere felici, di riuscire ad essere liberi. Amate la vita e volete viverla pienamente. Desiderate un grande futuro, che vi ricolmi di speranza, avete sete di verità; e desiderate nel profondo del vostro cuore che vi amino, che vi capiscano; e anche voi volete amare gli altri. Cercate la giustizia, l’autenticità, la lealtà, l’amore disinteressato, la comunicazione sincera. Ambite la pace.
Ma al di là di tutte queste aspirazioni, in fondo, non cercate forse Dio? Ma non un dio qualsiasi, bensì il Dio che si è dato a conoscere con un volto umano, Gesù. Non aspettate e cercate forse Gesù, a volte e magari senza neppure saperlo? Perché, guardate, solo Gesù Cristo è la vita e lontano da Lui non troviamo altro se non la morte. Se soltanto Lui è la via, lontani da Lui siamo disorientati e perduti, perché Lui solo è la via che ci porta a Dio, che ci conduce agli altri. Lui soltanto è la verità che ci fa liberi, la luce che illumina ogni uomo e ogni donna e al di fuori di Lui troviamo solo buio e carenza di libertà. Venite a Lui, voi tutti! Venite a Lui, voi giovani anelanti di libertà, desiderosi di una vita piena, assetati di senso per le vostre persone, affamati di felicità e gioia piena! Vi diranno che ciò che è sensato si trova altrove, che altrove vi troverete «a vostro agio». Non abbeveratevi alle pozzanghere, quando potete bere alla sorgente d’acqua viva, a questa fonte inesauribile che è l’unica in grado di saziare la vostra sete e la vostra ricerca: Gesù Cristo.
Provate a sedervi a questa mensa, cioè a seguire Gesù, identificandovi con Lui: vi accorgerete che lui non delude, che qualcosa di inaspettato avviene dentro voi e dilata la vostra voglia di vivere, le vostre illusioni, i vostri traguardi, la vostra speranza, la vostra solidarietà. Avvicinatevi a Gesù e sperimenterete qualcosa di inimmaginabile. Venite a Lui, voi tutti, e troverete Dio, ritroverete voi stessi e gli altri in un modo nuovo: la vostra vita si ricolmerà di senso, si caricherà di speranza e sarete capaci di aprire strade di amore vero nel mondo. Quando a causa della vostra giovane età molte strade si aprono davanti a voi e in tanti vi si fanno incontro per offrirvi percorsi alternativi – alcuni di essi senza direzione -, quando avete tante incertezze da affrontare e incognite sulla vostra vita da chiarire: lì davanti a voi c’è Gesù Cristo, che parla a ciascuno di voi e vi chiede di seguirlo, che vi chiama e vi invita con il più grande rispetto della vostra libertà. Solo in Lui troverete quanto cercate e ancora di più. Voi avete bisogno di Gesù per poter percorrere le strade della vita. Egli ha voluto avere bisogno di voi, ha consegnato se stesso per voi, per tutti e ciascuno, e vi chiede di aiutarlo e di andare con Lui per portare a tutti il suo Vangelo di speranza e di salvezza. Pensate al mondo, al nostro mondo, nel quale senza di Lui si spegnerebbe il Vangelo dell’amore e della pace e si perderebbe la speranza. Agite, dunque, di conseguenza!
Quanti sono delusi dalle prospettive dell’odierna civiltà, invitateli ad essere insieme a voi costruttori della civiltà dell’amore. Vivete per Cristo, così come
Cristo vive per voi; sconfiggete tutte le disperazioni; siate più forti di ciò che vi assedia, presentandosi con parvenza di autenticità. Difendete la vita, servite la vita. Che i vostri cuori siano aperti alla vita! Servite l’uomo! Dimostrate come si vive per Cristo, con Cristo e in Cristo.
Questo è il nostro servizio migliore all’umanità e il nostro contributo più prezioso: rendere possibile a tutti l’incontro con Gesù Cristo. La Chiesa e i cristiani non possiedono altra parola che Gesù Cristo, che è Via, Verità e Vita. Non dimentichiamola. Non possiamo tacerla! Non possiamo lasciarla morire. Non possiamo né dobbiamo nascondere Gesù Cristo. Non abbiamo il diritto di farlo. Egli non ci appartiene: appartiene a tutti gli uomini e le donne di questo mondo. Gesù Cristo! Voi lo conoscete e lo amate. A voi ripeto il Suo nome e lo annuncio, cosicché voi possiate annunciarlo e rendere testimonianza a Lui. Aprite le porte a Cristo!
E guardate la Vergine Maria: tutta santa, piena di grazia, tutta bella! Beata perché ha creduto; ancella fedele del Signore, perché appartiene pienamente a Dio, e perciò pronta a servire il Signore: premurosa verso sua cugina Elisabetta nel momento del bisogno, solerte con gli sposi di Cana nella difficoltà e, soprattutto, presente ai piedi della croce. Ci consegna suo Figlio, vive per suo Figlio e, come un giorno disse ai servi di Cana «Fate quello che vi dira» e l’acqua si trasformò nel vino della gioia, gioia del Dio-con-noi, così anche oggi continua ad esortarci ad ascoltare Gesù, anticipando anche nella vita di ognuno di noi l’ora di Dio.
Dear Young People:
I greet you from my heart. All my affection and my friendship for each and all of you!
I am very happy to be able to share with you this Eucharist, in which Christ becomes present amongst us, as he did that afternoon on the road to Emmaus. Here, among us, the hour of Jesus is fulfilled, that hour which we hear of in the Gospel today: the hour in which Christ offers himself freely to the Father, fulfilling His will and bringing to an end the mission received from Him in which he reveals, loving us to the end, that God is love and mercy. The men of his time, who did not know what they were doing, had the intention of arresting him and eliminating him, or actually to kill him: they tried, but He is alive. Jesus fulfilled the will of the Father to the end, giving his life for the salvation of all. In this way the hour for which he was sent is fulfilled: the hour of the salvation of mankind. Even today, for many who don’t know what they do, who don’t know Jesus, who don’t know God who is immeasurable and limitless love, he is an uncomfortable figure and, in a wrong way, try to eliminate him. But Jesus, always present among us, continues to show us the face of God who sent his Son to the world because he loves men and sends him, not to condemn the world, but to save it. Nevertheless, many men and women, many young people, search and believe that the salvation and happiness of man can be found in pleasure, in well-being at any cost, in limitless liberty, in sex, in the affirmation of themselves thinking less of God, in power and in having opposed to thoughts about God, in searching to impose on others their own will, in narcissistic enjoyment or in the egoism of who trusts in their own flesh. But they are wrong, because there is no salvation in those things, there is no future, there is no possible hope. They look and walk on the wrong path. Some, unfortunately, don’t even look anymore.
Permit me to ask you a question: What are you looking for or what are you hoping for?
Actually, I know very well that your hearts look and wait. Despite that which may seem an despite what some may think about young people today, life has neither closed or shutdown in you noble and profound aspirations. You seek to be happy, to succeed in being free. You love life and wish to live it fully. You desire a great future, that will fill you hope, you are thirsty for truth; and even you want to love others. You seek justice, authenticity, loyalty, disinterested love, sincere communication. You long for peace.
But beyond all these aspirations, deep down, do you not perhaps seek God? But not any god, rather the God who has made Himself known with a human face, Jesus. Do you not, perhaps, wait for and seek Jesus, sometimes without realizing it. Because, you see, only Jesus Christ is life and far from Him we find nothing else but death. If only he is the way, far from him we are disoriented and lost, because only he is the way that leads to God, which leads to others. Only he is the truth that makes us free, the light that illumines every man and woman and outside of him we find only darkness and lack of freedom. Come to him, all of you! Come to him, you young people longing for freedom, desiring a full life, thirsty for sense, hungry for happiness and full joy. They will tell you that that which has sense is found elsewhere, that elsewhere you will find yourselves at ease. Don’t drink from the swamps when you can drink from the font of living water, in this interminable font which is the only one capable of satisfying your thirst and your search: Jesus Christ.
Try to sit at this table, in other words to follow Jesus, identifying with him: you will realize that he does not delude you, that something unexpected happens inside of you and delights your desire to live, your illusions, your gazes, your hopes, your solidarity. Come close to Jesus and experience something unimaginable. Come to him, all of you, and you will find God, you will find yourselves and others again in a new world: your lives will be filled with sense again, it will be filled with hope and you will be capable of opening roads of true love in the world. When because of your young age many roads open before you and so many come to find you to offer you alternate ways-some of those without direction-when you have so many uncertainties to confront and so many unknowns in your lives that need clarity: there before you is Jesus Christ, who talks to each one of you and asks you to follow him, who calls you and invites you with the greatest respect for your freedom. Only him you find what you are seeking and even more. You need Jesus in order to walk the roads of life. He wanted to have a need for you, he gave himself for you, for each and everyone, and he asks you to help him and walk with him to take his Gospel of hope and salvation to all. Think of the world, our world, in which without him the Gospel of love and peace would lose its hope. Act, therefore, as a consequence.
How many are deluded by the perspectives of our modern society, invite them to be together with you builders of a society of love. Life for Christ, as Christ lives for you, challenge all you desperations; be stronger than that which assails you, which presents itself with lack of authenticity. Defend life, serve life. May your hearts be open to life! Serve humanity! Demonstrate how one lives for Christ, with Christ and in Christ.
This is our best service to humanity and our precious contribution: make the encounter with Jesus Christ possible for all. The Church and Christians don’t possess any other word than that of Jesus Christ, who is the way the truth and the life. Let’s not forget it. We cannot be quiet. We cannot let it die. We cannot and should not hide Jesus Christ. We don’t have the right to do it. He does not belong to us: he belongs to all men and women of this world. Jesus Christ! You know him and love him. To you I repeat his name and announce it, in such a way that you will be able to announce hum and give witness to him. Open the doors to Christ.
And look at the Virgin Mary: all holy, full of grace, full of beauty. Blessed because she believed; faithful servant of the Lord, because she belongs fully to God, and therefore ready to serve the Lord: willing to help her cousin Elizabeth in the moment of need, attentive to the spouses in Canaan in their difficulty and, above all, present at the foot of the cross. She gives us her son, she lives for her son and, as she one day told the servants in Canaan: “Do what he tells you,” and the water turned into the wine of joy, the joy of God-with-us, so that even today he continues to ask us to listen to Jesus, anticipating even in each of our lives the hour of God.
